The High Cost of Getting Even:
Understanding and Preventing Retaliation Claims

A FREE WEBINAR from Workplace Answers

Tuesday, October 5, 11:00 AM PDT
Speakers: Lynn Lieber, Esq. & Allison West, Esq., SPUR

Retaliation claims are some of the riskiest and most expensive claims in the workplace. According to the EEOC, retaliation claims have doubled in the last ten years. The reasons should scare employers: retaliation claims are relatively easy to make – and prove – because the employee never has to show they suffered any harassment or discrimination.

Not scared yet? Don’t forget back in 2006 the U.S. Supreme Court greatly expanded the definition and scope of retaliation claims. But, they didn’t stop there. Recently, the High Court gave employees new avenues to bring these claims. This session will provide you with critical updates on retaliation law and give you valuable tips and tools to prevent these costly claims.

This free, 75 minute webinar will highlight:

  • Recent changes in the law that make it easier for employees to claim retaliation
  • The types of protected activities that can trigger protection under retaliation laws
  • Who is protected under the law
  • How to manage your workforce and the complaining party after a complaint has been filed
  • How to protect your company from claims
  • What your policies and training should include
  • Proactive tips and tools to avoid liability

Please join expert employment law attorneys, Lynn D. Lieber, Esq, Founder & CEO of Workplace Answers, and Allison West, Esq., SPHR, on October 5 an informative and timely employment law webinar for Human Resources professionals. Space is limited - Register Now!

The Fat Studies Reader

Edited by Esther D. Rothblum and Sondra Solovay, foreword by Marilyn Wann
Published by New York University Press. ISBN: 9780814776315
Release Date: 11/04/2009 -- 448 pages.

Book Cover: The Fat Studies Reader

We have all seen the segments on television news shows: A fat person walking on the sidewalk, her face out of frame so she can't be identified, as some disconcerting findings about the "obesity epidemic" stalking the nation are read by a disembodied voice. And we have seen the movies—their obvious lack of large leading actors silently speaking volumes. From the government, health industry, diet industry, news media, and popular culture we hear that we should all be focused on our weight. But is this national obsession with weight and thinness good for us? Or is it just another form of prejudice—one with especially dire consequences for many already disenfranchised groups?

The Fat Studies Reader is a milestone achievement, bringing together fifty-three diverse voices to explore a wide range of topics related to body weight. From the historical construction of fatness to public health policy, from job discrimination to social class disparities, from chick-lit to airline seats, this collection covers it all. Edited by two leaders in the field, The Fat Studies Reader is an invaluable resource that provides a historical overview of fat studies, an in-depth examination of the movement’s fundamental concerns, and an up-to-date look at its innovative research.

"So what’s wrong with putting on an extra pound, or ten pounds, or, for that matter, a hundred and ten? According to the contributors to The Fat Studies Reader, nothing.”
- The New Yorker

"A path-breaking anthology, and the first to map this emerging field. Leading scholars and activists from diverse disciplinary backgrounds explore the pervasiveness of prejudice based on body size, and challenge conventional policy responses. By focusing on goals of health, fitness, and social tolerance, The Fat Studies Reader redefines the ‘problem’ of weight and invites more promising solutions.”
- Deborah Rhode, Stanford Law School
